Working mom!

Following the lead of Town & Country Mom, I’ve decided to share a little bit about us with Kelly’s Korner’s readers!

I’m Marjorie!  And while my main job is CEO for Maloney Industries (a little joke Paul and I have where he is the CFO and I’m the boss!), I also work outside the home as folks say.

This me as a professional, which still kind of makes me laugh!

I’m 27 years old and mother to baby girl Taylor who is almost 8 months!  I work as a Learning & Talent Development Specialist at probably the coolest place on the coast, Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, an MGM Resorts International property.  Paul and I have been married since May 2008.  He is a Petty Officer 2nd Class (since I used my fancy title, we’ll give him his) in the US Navy which has us currently stationed in Gulfport, MS.

I really never imagined being a stay at home mother, I had a hard enough time imagining myself as a mother!!  However, with support from our friends here I was able to make the transition pretty easily and it’s even better now that daddy is home from deployment!

Our day usually goes something like this:

5:50 am – Paul wakes up and is quickly out the door.  (On a perfect day I would listen when he wakes me up and get up by 6:30 like I always plan to and hop on the elliptical, but since this is supposed to be how things usually go, I won’t mislead you, that rarely happens lol!)

7:35 am – I drag myself out of bed, motivated by the fact that I’m now running late!  Throw some make up on and my hair up in a twist and across the hall to get the baby.  She’s so cute, it doesn’t take much to get her ready so I change her into some play clothes for day care.

Bronson can’t hardly wait to see the baby each morning, he waits at her door!

8:20 am – Let the dog out and then into his kennel, grab the bottles lovingly made the night before by dear husband because we know I won’t have time in the morning, load up and we’re out the door.

I’ve got a 45ish minute drive of beautiful!

8:35 am – Drop the baby off at the daycare we found out in town through recommendations from friends I work with.  Miss Sandee is an angel who’s been taking care of babies here for 15+ years.  She also texts me pictures regularly that make my day! I felt pretty good leaving Taylor with her from the start, she’s been wonderful!  Usually chat for too long with the lovely ladies and rush out, officially late.

She’s happy playing with her friends!

9:05 am – Speed bump, schmeed bumps, glad I drive an SUV!  Arrive at the office and start a busy day!

My job includes development and facilitation of leadership programs to our management team in addition to employee engagement event planning and execution and community volunteer projects.  I am pretty much able to do what I want and set my own schedule, but the busier the better!  Right now I’m preparing to launch a Power Hour series based on this book, a trivia/pub quiz type event for our employees to have fun and raise money for our charitable foundation, and find new volunteer opportunities in the community to help us meet our property goal of 5,500 volunteer hours for 2012!

As much as I love my job, I really can’t wait to get home to the little one so I’m getting alot better at being out the door by 5:30 ish!  On most days I pick her up since it’s on the way home, however if Paul is off particularly early he’ll run over and pick her up.

This drive home really helps me leave most of the day behind me!

5:50 p – Snag a kiss from the baby girl and load her up to head home after Miss Kisha fills me in on her day.  Even though Taylor is no longer the baby in her class, I can tell she gets lots of attention from Kisha who is usually holding her when I get there!  She usually naps after a long day of playing with her friends.

Sleepy baby will be wide awake as soon as we walk through the door!

6:30 p – We’re home and loving on daddy and the dog, even the cat.  Deciding what’s for dinner has been easier since we’ve been planning our meals in advance and shopping for several weeks worth.  This has been a transition for us since we were eating out as much as 4 times a week!  But, budget demands have changed with the addition of a third vehicle, so we’ve been cooking!

Ready to recreate Carino’s Skilletini…I’ve been taking these lately in hopes of starting a new food devoted blog soon, I’ll link it when I figure out what I’m doing!

Before, during, and after dinner is all about Taylor!  We laugh and play and of course watch some Big Bang Theory after the Wheel.

8:30 p – Bath, Book, & Bedtime!  Not always all three, if she’s tired and starts to fuss it’s straight to bed.

Time to brush my teeth!

After that, we take some time to pick up, clean the kitchen, make bottles and head upstairs for the night.  This is where we really get lazy and watch tv, snuggle up with our laptops, and play Words with Friends.  Before we know it, it’s time to start all over again!

Some days are a little more hectic, as I also volunteer as an Ombudsman so I’ll occasionally have a Family Readiness Group or Ombudsman Assembly meeting to attend for Paul’s command, and I recently took on volunteering at our church, St. Thomas the Apostle to help with publicity and communication so I’ll have things with that too.  But, like I said, the busier the better!

On being a working mom, well the working part comes much more naturally than the mom part but I’m picking up quickly I think.  A mentor recently told me it’s a lot more about the quality of time and activities you do together, so I’m looking forward to getting Taylor as involved as I’ve always been, if that’s what she wants!  And I definitely agree with Barbara on letting the housework go so I can play more with Taylor in the evening time we have.  I’ve also come to LOVE my weekends!  What I didn’t anticipate about being a working mom, the judgement!  Who knew people felt so strongly one way or another?!  Mom’s should support each other and understand we’re all doing a tough job of shaping the life of these little folks, regardless of staying at home or working!  I’d love to see more unity in that regard, but I’ll get off my soap box now.

This was a fun little exercise for me, on a day I feel like I haven’t gotten anything done and it’s almost noon…I think I deserve a little break, and maybe even something sweet!  Thanks for stopping by!
